Religion in Westeros and Beyond the Wall.

The western continent of the world of A Song of Ice and Fire is split into Westeros and the land Beyond the Wall. Westeros is split into Seven Kingdoms which are politically united under the rule of the Iron Throne. While the official religion of the Seven Kingdoms is that of The Seven in the North they still worship the old gods as do the free folk or wildlings beyond the wall. The Iron Born living on the Iron Islands still worship their own old gods, the Drowned God and the Storm God. Disciples of the Red God have also made their way across the Narrow Sea to spread their religion, such as Thoros, who originally stays at court trying to persuade the King, and Melisandre, who seduces Stannis Baratheon into switching religions and acting based on the religion of the Red God.  Even though the religion of the Red God has reached Westeros, especially in the later books, because it is more prominent and based in Essos I will be discussing it in that section.

Religion in most of Westeros is heavily connected to who is control of the Iron Throne with religion gaining and losing power depending on who is ruling. Religion in Westeros, especially in the South where no one, or very few, worship the Old Gods, lacks magic and sorcery instead seeming to be only about ceremony, politics and power. Religion in Westeros is very similar to religions of the western world. In Western Europe and North America religious power is tied to who is in power at the time. Religion from the west is often about ceremonies and politics and has a history heavily steeped in being close to the ruling class and taking advantage of the masses.

In the far north of Westeros where people still believe in the Old Gods their still seems to be a little magic. Religion is not an organization but rather a believe system. Beyond the Wall where the world is mostly untouched by the Seven Kingdoms and their Seven Gods the Old Gods seem to have great power. There is magic and magical creatures Beyond the Wall that are deeply connected to religion. The Old Gods would seem most similar to folk religions such as those of Native Americans.

There is not as much known about the gods of the Iron Islands but from what we do know they seem to be most similar to Norse gods. It is a polytheistic religion with different god representing different natural phenomena. It reads as similar to the Norse god because of the focus of their culture on being strong warrior types, this is even mostly preferred for the women.

Here is a video speaking about Religion in Westeros from HBO's A Game of Thrones:
